Discover the Deep-Sea Corals of Maine

April 22, 2016
#EarthDayNOAA

This Earth Day, see how scientists with NOAA Fisheries discovered deep-sea coral gardens in relatively shallow waters of the Gulf of Maine. Unknown to researchers until 2014, these spots abound with corals, cod, and even a snapping goosefish.

As their name suggests, deep-sea corals live in cold oceanic waters. They provide structure and habitat for an array of animals including popular seafood species.

When human activities damage corals, they may take several decades or centuries to recover. Research will help guide management decisions for these vulnerable ecosystems.

Celebrate Earth Day with a closer look at these coral gardens and rare deep-sea beauties.
