It's Habitat Month at Fisheries: Dig In!

A Message from Pat Montanio, Director of NOAA Fisheries Office of Habitat Conservation

July 5, 2017

I am excited to announce Habitat Month here at NOAA Fisheries. All month long, we will be highlighting examples of how healthy habitat is the foundation for sustaining fisheries and recovering protected species. This month-long campaign celebrates the benefits of habitat conservation to fish and wildlife, communities, and the economy.

Our primary focus is to protect and restore habitat to sustain fisheries, recover protected species, and maintain resilient coastal ecosystems and communities. Without healthy habitat, we cannot sustain the fisheries that will feed Americans now and into the future. In order to be successful, we must do this through partnerships and collaboration. We are able to accomplish more on the ground through our partnerships. By recognizing the multiple benefits of collaboration, and through leveraging our technical capabilities and resources, we are able to be more effective and reach bigger solutions together.

During Habitat Month, we will be showcasing new products, holding a photo contest, highlighting the important work of habitat staff across the country, and announcing projects for funding from several recent grant competitions. Tune in to see a new video about the Choptank Habitat Focus Area, our “What is Habitat?” infographic, and a report about the Socioeconomic Benefits of Habitat Restoration among others.

Please join us online and learn more about NOAA's ongoing work and successes related to habitat conservation and restoration. Together, there is a way.
