Partnerships between the science community and the fishing industry support sustainable fisheries. We facilitate these efforts through our Exempted Fishing Permit Program and Research Set-Aside Program. 

Exempted Fishing Permit Program

Exempted fishing permits and scientific research acknowledgments ensure our science partners and fishing industry collaborators have the necessary permits and vessel documentation to support their research. EFPs enable research throughout the Greater Atlantic Region across a broad spectrum of topics. This can include trialing new fishing practices, fishing gears, or management strategies, or data collection activities that are otherwise prohibited by federal fishing regulations. Our program also acknowledges activities as scientific research aboard scientific research vessels, which are not subject to certain fishing regulations. Visit our EFP Program to learn more. 

Research Set-Aside Program 

RSA programs support cooperative research that helps us manage our fisheries. Instead of funding research through federal appropriations, funds are derived through proceeds generated from the sale of fish and fishing opportunities. Partnerships between RSA grant award recipients and the fishing industry are the foundation for these successful cooperative research programs. Conservation Engineering Compendium

The Conservation Engineering Compendium is an archive of conservation engineering research project final reports in the Greater Atlantic Region, born from long-standing cooperative research partnerships between fishery scientists, members of the fishing industry, and fishery managers.
