ESA Permit for Black Abalone Feeding and Growth Studies

San Diego State University (SDSU) has requested a research permit to collect juvenile black abalone for laboratory studies evaluating the effects of an invasive algae on feeding and growth. The permit would allow research activities to be conducted over a two-year period.

The purpose of the proposed work is to inform restoration efforts for black abalone. Activities would include field collection of juvenile black abalone and laboratory studies comparing the feeding and growth of juvenile black abalone when offered a diet of native and/or invasive algae. The proposed work would contribute to our understanding of how this invasive algae may affect recovery of black abalone and inform selection of restoration sites.

The permit application has been posted for public comment on March 10, 2026. Public comments are due on or before April 9, 2026. Written comments should be submitted to susan.wang@noaa.gov. Please include the permit number (28932) in the subject line of the email.
