North Pacific right whale.

Location: Kodiak Island

Timing: TBD

Funding: TBD

Project: Despite once occupying a large historical distribution range, sightings of the critically endangered North Pacific right whale in the northern Gulf of Alaska are rare. NOAA scientists are hoping to deploy a long-term passive acoustic recorder off Kodiak Island in areas of recent sightings to monitor for this species year-round. Data obtained from this recorder will help determine seasonal presence of right whales in an area of high fishing activity.
