Announcing the Renaming of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument

January 02, 2025

The White House announced the renaming of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument after a two-year, collaborative engagement process with Pacific Island communities and individuals across the Pacific.

The White House announced the renaming of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument to the Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument!

This new name honors the cultural and ancestral connections, diversity, and historical significance shared by Indigenous communities across the Pacific with these islands and atolls.

The name reflects input from extensive community engagement, including 70 interviews with Pacific Island communities and discussions during the 13th Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture (FestPAC) in Honolulu. A meaningful step forward in recognizing the region’s rich heritage!
