NMFS Announces Atka Mackerel Fishery Dates For Amendment 80 Cooperative Vessels and BSAI Trawl Limited Access for the Harvest Limitation Area Fishery in Area 542 and Area 543 of the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands

Notice of a fishery management action.

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is announcing the opening and closing dates of the Atka mackerel directed fishery for the Amendment 80 cooperative vessels authorized to participate within the harvest limit area (HLA) in Central Aleutian District (Statistical Area 542) and Western Aleutian District (Statistical Area 543), and for Bering Sea Aleutian Island (BSAI) Trawl Limited Access vessels authorized to participate within the HLA of Area 542 according to Robert D. Mecum, Acting Administrator, Alaska Region, NMFS.

The directed fishery in the HLA for Area 542 by the Amendment 80 cooperative vessels authorized to participate in the first HLA fishery in area 542, opens effective 1200 hrs, A.l.t., March 27, 2009. The HLA fishery in Area 542 will remain open until 1200 hrs, A.l.t., April 6, 2009.

The directed fishery in the HLA for Area 542 by the Amendment 80 cooperative vessels authorized to participate in the second HLA fishery in area 542, opens effective 1200 hrs, A.l.t., April 7, 2009. The HLA fishery in Area 542 will remain open until 1200 hrs, A.l.t., April 15, 2009.

The directed fishery in the HLA for Area 542 by the BSAI Trawl Limited Access vessels authorized to participate in the first HLA fishery in area 542, opens effective 1200 hrs, A.l.t., March 27, 2009. The HLA fishery in Area 542 will remain open until 1200 hrs, A.l.t., April 6, 2009.

The directed fishery in the HLA for Area 543 by the Amendment 80 cooperative vessels authorized to participate in the first HLA fishery in area 543, opens effective 1200 hrs, A.l.t., March 27, 2009. The HLA fishery in Area 543 will remain open until 1200 hrs, A.l.t., April 6, 2009.

This action is necessary to fully use the 2009 A season HLA limit established for the vessels participating in the Amendment 80 cooperative in Areas 542 and 543, and BSAI trawl limited access. This action is issued pursuant to 50 CFR 679.25(a)(1)(i), (a)(2)(i)(C), and (a)(2)(iii)(D).

After the effective date of this closure, the maximum retainable amounts at 50 CFR 679.20(e) and (f) apply at any time during a trip.
