Compliance with fisheries resource laws is crucial to sustaining healthy living marine resources and a prosperous fishing industry. The NOAA Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement (OLE) seeks to improve compliance by conducting outreach to various sectors of industry.
OLE has conducted an analysis of industry self-reported data (e.g. logbooks) and observer statements involving CPs participating in the Amendment 80, American Fisheries Act, and Pacific cod longline fisheries.
Four compliance topics are summarized:
- Prohibited Species Mishandling
- Record Keeping and Reporting
- Observer Safety
The goal of this notice is to advise of OLE compliance concerns and to improve compliance through education and voluntary compliance. The full letter addressed to owners, operators, and managers can be found here.
