Kyra DeGroat

Physical Science Technician

B.A. Biology, Minor Environmental Studies - College of the Holy Cross 2020-2024

Background

Kyra is a Physical Science Technician at the Milford Lab supporting a research study assessing the population adaptation of Atlantic surfclams to ocean acidification and phytoplankton availability.

Kyra earned her B.A. in Biology with a minor in Environmental Studies from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. As an undergraduate at Holy Cross, Kyra was a part of the Marine Organismal Biology Lab and studied Astrangia poculata, a shallow-water hard coral that can be found from Cape Cod to the Gulf of Mexico. She interned at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science where she collected and processed sediment cores from seagrass meadows to quantify carbon stocks. Most recently, Kyra worked aboard the SSV Corwith Cramer as Program Assistant for the Sea Education Association and contributed to their educational and community development programming for SEA Expedition students.

Through her work, Kyra has developed a passion for scientific outreach and research that informs the sustainable management of marine ecosystems and resources.
