Maxwell Kleinhans

Originally from western Wisconsin, Max Kleinhans became interested in fisheries growing up exploring the local tributaries and backwaters of the Upper Mississippi River. He studied computer science and biological aspects of conservation as an undergraduate at University of Wisconsin-Madison and fisheries science as a graduate student at the University of Georgia. His thesis work examined long-term trends in Shortnose Sturgeon recruitment and relationships between juvenile Atlantic Sturgeon distribution and water quality dynamics in the Altamaha River in Georgia. His professional work has ranged from field research on invasive mussels in Minnesota, marine crustacean diseases in Virginia, and native salmonids in Wyoming to geospatial analyses of marsh vegetation health in Georgia and rainwater harvesting interventions in sub-Saharan Africa. As a NOAA affiliate with Azura, Max contributes to efforts to improve our understanding of imperiled anadromous fish populations.
