Sarah Bodenstein

As the new Regional Aquaculture Liaison for Connecticut Sea Grant, Sarah bridges the gap between NOAA’s Milford Lab research and aquaculture industry needs across the Northeast, from Maine to Virginia. Her work focuses on accelerating technology transfer, engaging the academic research community in collaborative projects, and facilitating communication between industry and academia to ensure research addresses ongoing and emerging needs. Current projects include: 

• developing an interactive guide to assist shellfish hatcheries with starting and improving microalgae culture techniques
• evaluating the emerging challenges that Northern quahog growers face
• assisting the Northeast Oyster Breeding Center in standardizing breeding protocols

Before moving to Connecticut, Sarah completed her graduate studies at Auburn University and Louisiana State University, where her research focused on how oyster breeding programs, hatchery protocols, and farming techniques influence aquaculture yields and product quality along the Gulf Coast. Sarah’s long-term career goal is to continue applying interdisciplinary research to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of aquaculture operations, benefiting coastal communities, economies, and ecosystems.
