Educator Workshop: The Phenomenal Outdoors—Science Investigations with Elementary Students

Elementary students are natural scientists—curious about the world around them and finding their place in it. Join the NOAA National Ocean Service and the Environmental Science Training Center in Oxford, Maryland, for a free professional development experience designed for elementary classroom teachers (Grades K–5) that will help to ignite excitement and curiosity about science in your elementary classroom!
This workshop is for K–5 classroom teachers working in the Chesapeake Bay watershed states. It bridges the gap between locally relevant environmental science and everyday classroom instruction. We will model interdisciplinary, phenomena-based learning focusing on the environmental issue of marine debris while exploring the waterfront town of Oxford. Come for a fun and interactive workshop. You’ll leave with the resources, tools, and professional connections to design your own locally relevant investigations.
Workshop Benefits
- Lunch will be provided both days
- $250 stipend (upon completion of course requirements)
- Continuing Education Credits: anticipated 1 CPD for Maryland, 15 Act 48 hours for Pennsylvania, or a Certificate of Completion with 15 clock hours. These hours include 12 hours of in-person training and 3 hours of pre and post work.
- Hotel accommodations are available for the night of Tuesday, August 4, for those traveling more than 50 miles from Oxford, Maryland.
Workshop Objectives
- Increase access to disciplinary literacy opportunities that center science, outdoor learning, locally environmental phenomena, and student experience
- Experience how locally relevant phenomena-based learning can boost student curiosity and interdisciplinary opportunities
- Collaborate with colleagues on curricular opportunities supporting science and outdoor learning as well as curriculum development and integration
- Support teachers in serving as school leaders advancing science and environmental learning and disciplinary literacy
- Center joy by learning and having fun in the outdoors and collaborate on how to create student opportunities for joy
