Embark on a Virtual Journey to Lalo

Join NOAA Fisheries scientists as they broadcast live from Lalo (French Frigate Shoals) in the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 from 1–1:45 p.m. Hawai'i Standard Time.

This remote island is a special place where NOAA scientists monitor and support the recovery of endangered Hawaiian monk seals (ʻĪlioholoikauaua) and threatened Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu).

Every year, NOAA sets up field camps at Lalo to monitor these species, helping ensure their populations grow and thrive. Field camps are essential for collecting data that guides conservation efforts and supports the recovery of these protected marine animals.

NOAA scientists will take you on a live tour of their field camp on Lalo. During the webinar, participants will:

  • Learn how scientists monitor protected Hawaiian monk seals and green sea turtles and work to keep them safe

  • Have the opportunity to ask questions and speak directly with the scientists
