NWFSC Monster Seminar Jam: Dr. Christine Stawitz
This seminar is part of the Northwest Fisheries Science Center's Monster Seminar Jam series.
About
Dr. Christine Stawitz, Ph.D. (NOAA Fisheries' Office of Science and Technology) is presenting her talk, "Shared software development strategies facilitate implementing ecosystem-based fisheries management."
Abstract
The NOAA Fisheries Integrated Toolbox (FIT) replaces the Fisheries Toolbox developed at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center and aims to promote and standardize software tool development between regions and disciplines that span fisheries stock assessment, protected resources, ecosystem modeling, and socioeconomics. In this way, the toolbox parallels the integrated approach of Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management, which must include holistic consideration of the effect of management policies on the population dynamics of commercially-harvested fish species, protected species, interspecific interactions, and on human societies and economies. The toolbox aims to improve access to and usability of tools, but also creates an exciting opportunity to make disciplinary tools more integrated and interoperable. By standardizing software design, development, and standards, the toolbox enables an integrated modeling approach to EBFM. As an example, I will discuss software packages in development at NOAA Fisheries that enable faster and easier analyses of how climate change affects marine ecosystems and management. I will also discuss how an eye towards extensible and standardized software design from the beginning of development of a new tool can make it easier to integrate future models and tools.
Biography
Christine has a bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering and Computer Science and earned her Ph.D. in Quantitative Ecology and Resource Management in 2017 working with Dr. Tim Essington. Her PhD research focused on how variation in somatic growth can impact population dynamics and management. After a postdoc at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center, she joined NOAA Fisheries' National Stock Assessment Program as a contractor with ECS Federal. In her current role, she works on stock assessment model development and comparison and also collaborates with Corinne Bassin, NOAA Fisheries Integrated Toolbox lead, on the NOAA FIT.
