Recovery Workshop for Listed Ice Seals in Alaska
Join us for an in-person and virtual workshop to help develop recovery plans for the Beringia Distinct Population Segment bearded seals and Arctic ringed seals.
About
NOAA Fisheries is developing recovery plans for both the Beringia Distinct Population Segment (DPS) bearded seals and Arctic ringed seals, which are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). To gather stakeholder input on these plans, NOAA Fisheries will host an in-person workshop in Anchorage, AK. This workshop will also have a virtual option. Both options will be open to the public.

On December 28, 2012, NOAA Fisheries listed the Beringia DPS bearded seal and the Arctic ringed seal both as a threatened species under the ESA (77 FR 76739; 77 FR 76706, respectively). NOAA Fisheries is developing recovery plans for these species and is seeking stakeholder input. A recovery plan serves as a road map for species recovery—the plan outlines the path and tasks required to restore and secure self-sustaining wild populations. It is a non-regulatory document that describes, justifies, and suggests a schedule for the research and management actions necessary to support recovery of each species.
An integral part of the recovery plan will include engaging marine mammal subsistence harvesters and users, the State, and other stakeholders in identifying criteria, actions, and strategies to support the recovery of the species.
