National Hispanic Heritage Month honors the histories, cultures, and contributions of those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. To celebrate, we asked a few of our 2021 IN FISH! students who identify as Hispanic to share a little about their internship experience and express what National Hispanic Heritage Month means to them. Matteo Torres (he/him) is originally from Wilmington, California. He’s currently a student at California State University, Long Beach, majoring in biology. For Matteo’s internship, he worked with mentors George Liles, director of the Academic Programs Office at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center, and Javier Fochesatto, Professor and Chair Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, to better understand changes in snow precipitation rates in the Arctic.

What did you work on for your project?
My project focused on building a computer program that reads lidar data and analyzes it for low-level cloudiness during the winter in Fairbanks, Alaska. The goal is to create a program that will read the cloud signal, plot it with respect to altitude, and construct a derivative to find the base and height of the cloud. This helps scientists analyze and draw conclusions about increasing precipitation rates over time.
¿En qué trabajaste para tu proyecto?
Mi proyecto se centró en la creación de un programa informático que lea datos lidar y los analice durante periodos de nubosidad baja en el invierno en Fairbanks, Alaska. El objetivo fue crear un programa que lea la señal de la nube, trazarla con respecto a la altitud y construir una derivada para encontrar la base y la altura de la nube. Esto ayudara a los científicos a analizar y sacar conclusiones sobre el aumento de las tasas de precipitación a lo largo del tiempo.
Can you tell us a little about your internship experience?
My favorite part about the internship was being able to attend workshops that focused on providing useful resources for our career development. My favorite workshop was being able to hear from the graduate school panel about their experiences and their unfiltered journeys as young scientists. A new skill I gained during my internship is computer programming and using MATLAB to extract and analyze data.

Mi parte favorita de la pasantía fue poder asistir a talleres que se enfocaron en brindar recursos útiles para nuestro desarrollo profesional. Mi taller favorito fue poder escuchar al panel de la escuela de posgrado sobre sus experiencias y sus viajes sin filtros como científicos jóvenes. Una nueva habilidad que adquirí durante mi pasantía fue la programación de computadoras y el uso de MATLAB para extraer y analizar datos
What does National Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?
National Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to appreciate the many different cultures, highlight important Hispanic individuals who have contributed to our history, and commemorate the influence of Hispanic culture in the United States. It’s a month to celebrate diversity and inclusion for those who have immigrated to this country and others who have ancestry from Spanish-speaking countries. For many people, including myself, this month provides a learning experience about the rich history of our people and their journey to the United States. Along their journey, they have brought traditions, authentic foods, artistry, and much more. Today, we get to share and celebrate each culture’s unique influence with those who are willing to listen, learn, and embrace the diversity in this country. As a Chicano, National Hispanic Heritage Month is a time for me to take a pause and reflect on my roots and the sacrifices my family had to make for me to be here today.
¿Qué significa para usted el Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana?
El Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana es un momento para apreciar las diferentes culturas, destacar a las personas hispanas importantes que han contribuido a nuestra historia y conmemorar la influencia de la cultura hispana en los Estados Unidos. Es un mes para celebrar la diversidad y la inclusión de aquellos que han inmigrado a este país y otros que tienen ascendencia de países de habla hispana. Para muchas personas, incluyéndome a mí, este mes ofrece una experiencia de aprendizaje sobre la rica historia de nuestra gente y su viaje a los Estados Unidos. A lo largo de su viaje, han traído tradiciones, comidas auténticas, arte y mucho más. Hoy, podemos compartir y celebrar la influencia única de cada cultura con aquellos que están dispuestos a escuchar, aprender y abrazar la diversidad de este país.
