I am pleased to announce that July is Habitat Month at NOAA Fisheries. This year, the theme is, "Habitat‒Working for You” which includes benefits from habitats and from NOAA’s work. This concept aligns well with our goals for a blue economy.
Healthy habitat is the foundation for robust fisheries which can lead to more seafood production. It is also important for coastal tourism and recreation. Many families enjoy visiting natural settings for recreation like fishing, swimming, and kayaking. Coral reefs, wetlands, and oyster reefs are shown to help improve coastal resilience by reducing flooding and protecting coastal communities from storms. “Coastal habitat not only benefits fish and wildlife, but also the economy and society,” said Admiral Timothy Gallaudet, Deputy NOAA Administrator. By recognizing the multiple benefits of habitat conservation, NOAA is able to be more effective and reach bigger solutions together with partners.
During Habitat Month, we have been showcasing new habitat communication products, holding a photo contest, highlighting the important work of NOAA habitat staff and partners across the country, and announcing funding for new projects from three grant competitions.
