10401 Data Set Published / External 6344 Cost Earnings Data - Longline (American Samoa and Hawaii) Project Completed 1994-12-31 These data were collected to support the first cost-earnings study of this fleet. Operational and vessel costs were collected by in-person interviews with vessel owners, captains, and crew. Revenue information was obtained from the Hawaii Department of Aquatic Resources commercial catch reports and NMFS logbooks (fishing effort). A total of 95 vessels (out of 122 active vessels in 1993) were interviewed and M. S. Hamilton, R.E. Curtis, and M.D. Travis conducted the project. The objective of this study was to provide baseline economic information associated with operating a pelagic longline vessel in Hawaii in 1993. Additional objectives included documenting physical and operational characteristics of vessels, economic impacts of the most recent regulations, fishermen's opinions on the status of the fishery, and basic demographics of the Hawaii-based longline fleet.
