These data represent a cost-earnings study of the Hawaii small boat fishery in 1995-1996. Data collected include fisher classification, vessel characteristics, levels of investment, trip-level expenditures, fishing behavior, market participation, social aspects of the fishery, and demographics.
The purpose of the cost-earnings study was to update our understanding of the economic and social characteristics of the Hawaii small boat fishery. Collection of these baseline data provides managers with an updated understanding of potential behavioral responses and impacts from future fishing regulations.

Representativeness
A total of 569 interviews were completed for small boat fishermen across the State of Hawaii
After the data were recorded through primary in-person data collection methods (paper), data were entered into the data entry file (MS Access database). Then the entered data were subject to logic tests and appropriate skip patterns. The data were assessed for outliers and cleaned. Finally, the cleaned data were used to generate data reports and summaries.
