This database contains a time series of consumer-level prices for a sample of retail markets in Honolulu between 2007-2011. Data include weekly prices for fish species prevalent in Honolulu retail seafood markets. Additionally, each record contains information on the product form, origin of the fish (if known), labelling schemes, quality (where applicable), and the use of preservation methods (such as CO-treatment).
The purpose of this data collection effort was to gain a better understanding of retail (consumer) markets in Hawaii. Time series data at the consumer level could support research into price transmission within the Hawaii seafood market. Additionally, having a record of retail pricing and market observations provides valuable insights into the market responses of management actions. There is no historic record of consumer-level prices for fish in Hawaii so this research provides a baseline understanding of the retail market sector.

The data reflects weekly prices based on our sample of Honolulu retail outlets. Data were collected through non-probabilistic sampling and numerous individuals were involved with the data collection effort. With that said the data are reasonably representative of trends in retail prices.
Non-probabilistic sampling was used and no effort is used to provide any population-level estimates.
True retail prices values are unknown, and was not the intent of this research. However, the data provide insights into pricing trends for the markets participating in the research effort.
After the data were recorded through primary in-person data collection methods (paper), data were entered into the data entry file (MS Access database). Then the entered data were subject to logic tests and appropriate skip patterns. The data were assessed for outliers and cleaned. Finally, the cleaned data were used to generate data reports and summaries.
