In Work
Observer data span more than two decades and multiple database development interations. To facilitate status of stocks authors and other users of these records, a data set separate from the OLAP was created which reformats and repackages vetted (debriefed) observer data from NORPAC into a common structure, format, and syntax. The granularity of current production data is compromised, however for the purposes of longitudinal research the data set is internally consistant, and spans the developmental boundaries.

The granularity of current production data is compromised, however for the purposes of longitudinal research the data set is internally consistant, and spans the developmental boundaries.
All of these data are collected cooperatively from private commercial fishing interests and are protected from general release by confidentiality statutes. This protects the private business interests of industry while still providing NOAA Fisheries with the detailed information necessary to effectively manage the ecosystem. The staff authorized to use these data include NOAA Fisheries' scientists and managers participating in a broad range of activities including:
stock assessments,
marine mammal interactions,
food habits,
fish age analyses,
economic analyses,
fishery management plan development,
in-season fishery management.
The data are also shared with other authorized users in the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) and North Pacific Fishery Management Council staff with similar responsibilities.
Aggregations of observer data which protect confidentiality are periodically developed and released to the public. Observer data serve as essential building blocks for numerous public analyses, reports, and scientific documents.
Our Data-Spatial Maps page allows visitors use of the aggregated observer data to create ma

DEBRIEFED_HAUL_HOOK_COUNT

This table contains a flattened view of longline hook count data. Observers are required to determine the number and spacing of hooks used in fishing operations. These counts are assembled into deployable sets of hooks and assigned by the observer to a haul. Average hook counts and spacing is insufficient as mixed gear is allowed (sablefish and halobut for example). So this presentation layer provides detail information for analysis.

Completed
The debriefed trip table was created as a successor to the debriefed haul materialized view. As vessel trip information was rolled into the haul objects of the Domestic data set, the values recorded here represent the notion of a trip as defined in the ATL data (2008 onwards) This definition may be defined as "cast off - tie up". Any movement of a vessel is defined as a trip regardless of fishing activity. The use of this table is primarily for status of stocks authors who require a longitudinal view of observer data.

Debriefed_age_squash_concat is a materialized view created from the data in the debriefed_age table in a summary format presenting all specimen_types sampled for a single distinct individual animal are concatenated into one column. Also there is another column for all the corresponding concatenated specimen_type_descriptions. The debriefed_age table is a bridge object between the Domestic data (pre 2008) and the ATL data (2008 onwards) As such, refinements to the structure and statistical reliability realized in the redevelopment of Norpac are lost. The use of this table is primarily for status of stocks authors who require a longitudinal view of observer data.

Debriefed_age_sp_type is a materialized view created from the data in the debriefed_age table in a summary format presenting all specimen_types and specimen_type_descriptions in their own columns, with each row representing a distinct individual animal. Each specimen_type taken is denoted by a "Y" in its own column. The column is null for all specimen types not taken.

Data resides at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center OFIS division server farm on an Instance of an Oracle relational database.
These data are merged data sets reporting observer data from both prior to the observer redevelopment project and after the new model went live in December of 2007.
Because the granularity of the data changed at the development boundary, these data may have lost some of the richness of the newer data model. Some denormalization of post 2007 data has occurred.
Any bias is inherited from the source observer data.
These data are recomputed whenever the underlying data is changed.
The error and debriefing QA/QC process for source data applies.
