The collection and maintenance of captive marine mammal information is mandated under Section 104 of the Marine Mammal Protection Act (16 U.S.C. 1374) (MMPA). Consistent with this mandate, the NMFS, Office of Protected Resources, administers a Marine Mammal Inventory and Transport/Transfer Tracking System (MMINTTS) database which is a subpart of a large database (PPIMS; Permit Program and Inventory Management System) which housed both the permit and inventory records. The permit side of the database has been upgraded into APPS (Authorizations and Permits for Protected Species), but the inventory is still currently being maintained in PPIMS/MMINTTS.
