The main table contains all data collected from each bottomfish received and processed over the course of the Federal Disaster Relief Program (FDRP)-funded Hawaiian Archipelago Bottomfish Sampling Program as well as fish collected on the Oscar Elton Sette, other research cruises including small boat operations, hapu'upu'puu received from the Laysan during a separate project, and any bottomfish that are donated or purchased for age and growth research from the United Fishing Agency (UFA) fish auction, Chinatown, cooperating fishermen, etc. A list of contributing vessels and fishermen is available as child item in the bottomfish sampling data. Data and physical specimens were collected by fisheries associates and biologists of the Life History Program at the IRC lab or at sea. Information regarding the hardparts and tissues collected from each fish is documented in this dataset. Any bottomfish processed is included in this dataset.
An Ecosystem Science and Management Planning Workshop was held in April 2005 that re-emphasized the need to update life history parameters from commercially important species in the Hawaiian Archipelago and assess spatial connectivity of local bottomfish populations in the region. It was further recognized that this work would require the collection of large numbers of geo-referenced samples to re-estimate life history parameters and assess connectivity between isolated populations. Collection of bottomfish specimens began to accomplish this goal.
This dataset was originally created to include the information associated with fish purchased from contracted fishermen during the FDRP-Funded Hawaiian Archipelago Bottomfish Sampling Program. After funding ceased in June of 2008, it seemed logical to keep all information regarding bottomfish associated with physical data in one dataset so that querying for available hardparts and tissues would be fairly simple. Fish collected from research cruises, bought and/or donated from the UFA fish auction, bought from the local markets, and fish obtained by any other means that is associated with some type of physical specimen is included in this dataset.
Dataset was created to manage all information associated with the bottomfish collected in the Main and Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.
Information for bottomfish collected elsewhere (American Samoa, Johnston Atoll, and CNMI) are included in separate Excel spreadsheets.
As of 2013, this database is out of date and does not have the most recent information due to lack of personnel able to maintain an update an Oracle database.

Additional information is available on paper such as fishing logs submitted by fishermen with location, species, and tag information, as well as information collected from individual fish such as length, gonad weight, sex, etc. This physical data is in the FRMD storage room. Excel spreadsheets exist containing all information recorded on paper and are located on Meagan Sundberg's hard drive and the G: and H: drive at IRC that is backed up regularly. Information has been put into an Oracle Developer Form then uploaded into an online Oracle integrated database via the PIFSC's intranet, but this database is no longer operational due to lack of personnel able to maintain and update an Oracle database.
