Abstract

Slope is derived for islands and banks across the U.S. Pacific Islands Region primarily from gridded multibeam bathymetry collected aboard NOAA Ships Hi'ialakai and Oscar Elton Sette, and aboard R/V AHI (Acoustic Habitat Investigator) from 2003 to 2012 by the PIFSC Ecosystem Sciences Division (ESD). Other sources of available data used to derive slope for a few locations include estimated depths derived from IKONOS satellite imagery from 2000 to 2002, LIDAR data from 2001 and 2007, and multibeam bathymetry collected in 2001 and 2002. Slope grid cell values reflect the maximum rate of change (in degrees) in elevation between neighboring cells derived using the ArcGIS Spatial Analyst extension. The slope grids generated for each location are available via the Pacific Islands Benthic Habitat Mapping Center (PIBHMC) website. The data, maps, layer files, and detailed documentation (more specific than this pacific-wide record) about the data sources are included in the zip file for each location.

Title: Slope Grid Derived from Gridded Bathymetry for Select U.S. Coral Reef Locations across the Pacific Ocean
Short Name: Slope
Status: Completed
Publication Date: 2018
Abstract:

Purpose:

Prepared by the PIFSC Ecosystem Sciences Division (ESD) and funded by the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP), the data were derived in support of CRCP goals to map all U.S. coral reef ecosystems by developing high-resolution benthic maps to characterize priority reefs and associated habitats. This bathymetric derivative provides a GIS layer that may be used for benthic and essential fish habitat characterization, and for the study of geologic features. These data can be combined with bathymetry, backscatter, derivatives, and other datasets to compose benthic habitat maps that can be used to understand and predict benthic habitats for different organisms that inhabit coral reef ecosystems.

These maps were made possible with funding from the CRCP, and additional support was received from the NOAA Habitat Blueprint for the West Hawaii Focus Area.

NOAA Coral Reef Ecosystem Program (CREP) Data Sharing Recommendations, version 9.0 updated August 12, 2015:

CREP welcomes the opportunity to collaborate on research issues contributing to the scientific basis for better management of marine ecosystems. CREP has a very diverse set of field activities that generates large volumes of data using an array of data collection protocols.

The following recommendations are for your consideration as you use this data:

1) Data analyses should take all field exigencies into account. The most effective way to do this would be active collaboration with CREP principal investigators.

2) In all presentations, product releases, or publications using data generated by CREP, proper acknowledgement of both CREP and the individuals responsible for data collection is expected. Citing the DOI (if available) is preferred, a non-DOI example is listed below.

3) If you collect or generate data for the same study areas, CREP requests that you share relevant information on complimentary data collections.

4) Those receiving data are strongly urged to inform the CREP Data Management Team of any errors and discrepancies that are discovered during the course of using these data. They are further urged to bring to the attention of the Team all problems and difficulties encountered in using these data. This information is necessary in order to improve the collections and to facilitate more efficient and economical data processing and retrieval. The users are asked to supply copies of any missing data that may be located, and to provide information as to significant subsets and special aggregations of data that are developed in using the material provided.

Technical Environment

Description:

The Spatial Analyst extension was used in ArcMap to derive slope from the gridded bathymetry. Spatial Analyst --> Surface Analysis --> Slope using the following parameters: Input surface: gridded bathymetry layer; Output measurement: Degree; Z factor: 1; Output cell size: varies by location based on available data sources used (typically 5 m or 10 m, though 20 m, 40 m, 50 m and 60 m grids have been produced for some locations as well). The slope grid filename usually indicates cell size in meters.

Spatial reference: Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM), zone varies by location.

See maps and/or individual metadata found in each location's zip file in the downloads section for specific cell size and spatial reference (UTM zone) information.

Data Quality

Representativeness:

Slope values are primarily derived from gridded bathymetry data that is collected from a number of NOAA vessels using multibeam sonars. This multibeam data may be synthesized with other data including LiDAR bathymetry and Ikonos or WorldView satellite image derived bathymetry. Multibeam data collection targets waters from 20- to 500-m depths. LiDAR and satellite derived bathymetry target waters less than 20-meter depths. The goal of all data collection is to collect data over the entire seafloor within the 0-500 meter depth range.

Data artifacts may exist in the individual slope datasets as a result of problems associated with the original satellite imagery or with merging satellite-derived or LIDAR bathymetry with the multibeam bathymetry. These specific issues are captured and documented with the individual island files.

Accuracy:

Horizontal positioning system: GPS C/A

Horizontal position accuracy: typically 25 meters (refer to individual metadata files for each island for specific accuracy based on data sources used)

Range resolution of sonar: varies with depth

Raw sounding resolution: varies with depth

Vertical accuracy of gridded product: ~ 1% of water depth

Completeness Report:

Slope values were determined for all areas where gridded bathymetry data was available. Some gaps exist in bathymetry coverage due to hazardous conditions that prohibited access for the NOAA vessels or to limited time or funding resources.

Conceptual Consistency:

Multibeam bathymetry data were collected by different NOAA vessels using the same or similar collection methods. All multibeam data processing was conducted in the same or similar manner by the PIFSC Ecosystem Sciences Division. The MHI bathymetry synthesis provided by the Hawaii Mapping Research Group was the source data for the Main Hawaiian Islands products.

Quality Control Procedures Employed:

Corrections for tide variation and vessel attitude are applied to the multibeam data and a CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth instrument) cast is performed regularly during data collection to correct for variance within the water column .

Multibeam data are tested for internal consistency; however, no effort is made to compare these data to external references or to other published data.

Lineage

Lineage Statement:

The method to develop the geomorphological data layers are generally described in the Benthic Habitat Mapping "Overview" section of the Pacific Islands Benthic Habitat Mapping Center website.

Slope: Cell values reflect the maximum rate of change (in degrees) in elevation between neighboring cells.

Specific details on how the slope dataset was generated for each location can be found in the metadata record in the zip file for each island, available in the Distribution Information section.
