Bathymetric Position Index (BPI) Structures are derived for islands and banks across the U.S. Pacific Islands Region from a focal mean analysis on bathymetry and slope, and were created using the Benthic Terrain Modeler. Cell values represent one of 13 classes in an index of seafloor terrains.

The grids are based primarily on gridded multibeam bathymetry collected aboard NOAA Ships Hi'ialakai and Oscar Elton Sette and aboard R/V AHI (Acoustic Habitat Investigator) from 2003 to 2012 by the PIFSC Ecosystem Sciences Division (ESD). Other sources of available data used to derive BPI Zones for a few locations include estimated depths derived from IKONOS satellite imagery from 2000 to 2002, LIDAR data from 2001 and 2007, and multibeam bathymetry collected in 2001 and 2002.

The BPI Structure grid generated for each location is available via the Pacific Islands Benthic Habitat Mapping Center (PIBHMC) website. The data, maps, layer files, and detailed documentation (more specific than this pacific-wide record) about the data sources and data processing steps used are included in the zip file for each location.

Data is available here: https://www.soest.hawaii.edu/pibhmc/cms/data-by-location/
      <purpose>Prepared by the PIFSC Ecosystem Sciences Division (ESD) and funded by the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP), the data were derived in support of CRCP goals to map all U.S. coral reef ecosystems by developing high-resolution benthic maps to characterize priority reefs and associated habitats. This derivative of bathymetry provides a GIS layer that may be used for benthic and essential fish habitat characterization, and for the study of geologic features. By combining the dataset with bathymetry, backscatter, other derivatives, and in situ data, they collectively compose benthic habitat maps which are designed to be used to understand and predict benthic habitats for different organisms that inhabit coral reef ecosystems.

These maps were made possible with funding from the CRCP, and additional support was received from the NOAA Habitat Blueprint for the West Hawaii Focus Area.</purpose>

      <entity-attribute-overview>The Bathymetric Position Index (BPI) is a measure of where a referenced location is relative to the locations surrounding it. BPI is derived from a bathymetric dataset using a topographic position index (TPI) modified by Andrew Weiss and applied in the Benthic Terrain Modeler in ArcGIS. The BPI datasets are standardized to the values of the raster data set. A classification dictionary is created to define the number and type of classifications of seafloor characteristics. Values assigned during classification are defined within the classification dictionary and range from 1-13.</entity-attribute-overview>

      <data-access-policy>NOAA Coral Reef Ecosystem Program (CREP) Data Sharing Recommendations, version 9.0 updated August 12, 2015:

CREP welcomes the opportunity to collaborate on research issues contributing to the scientific basis for better management of marine ecosystems. CREP has a very diverse set of field activities that generates large volumes of data using an array of data collection protocols.

The following recommendations are for your consideration as you use this data:
1) Data analyses should take all field exigencies into account. The most effective way to do this would be active collaboration with CREP principal investigators.
2) In all presentations, product releases, or publications using data generated by CREP, proper acknowledgement of both CREP and the individuals responsible for data collection is expected. Citing the DOI (if available) is preferred, a non-DOI example is listed below.
3) If you collect or generate data for the same study areas, CREP requests that you share relevant information on complimentary data collections.
4) Those receiving data are strongly urged to inform the CREP Data Management Team of any errors and discrepancies that are discovered during the course of using these data. They are further urged to bring to the attention of the Team all problems and difficulties encountered in using these data. This information is necessary in order to improve the collections and to facilitate more efficient and economical data processing and retrieval. The users are asked to supply copies of any missing data that may be located, and to provide information as to significant subsets and special aggregations of data that are developed in using the material provided.

      <description>Bathymetric Position Index Structures were derived from gridded bathymetry using the Benthic Terrain Modeler (BTM).

Spatial reference: Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM), zone varies by location.

See maps and/or individual metadata found in each location's zip file in the distribution information section for specific cell size and spatial reference (UTM zone) information.</description>
   </technical-environment>
   <data-quality>
      <representativeness>BPI values are primarily derived from gridded bathymetry data that is collected from a number of NOAA vessels using multibeam sonars. This multibeam data may be synthesized with other data including LiDAR bathymetry and Ikonos or WorldView satellite image derived bathymetry. Multibeam data collection targets waters from 20 meters to 500 meters depth. LiDAR and satellite derived bathymetry target waters less than 20 meters depth. The goal of all data collection is to collect data over the entire seafloor within the 0-500 meter depth range.</representativeness>
      <accuracy>Horizontal positioning system: GPS C/A

Horizontal position accuracy: typically 25 meters (refer to individual metadata files for each island for specific accuracy based on data sources used)

Range resolution of sonar: varies with depth

Raw sounding resolution: varies with depth

Vertical accuracy of gridded product ~ 1% of water depth</accuracy>
      <completeness-report>BPI values have been determined for areas where gridded bathymetry data is available based primarily on geographic priorities set by funding sources (Tier 1 priorities set by the Coral Reef Conservation Program include the Mariana Archipelago, American Samoa, and the Main Hawaiian Islands). Areas outside these geographic priorities have been generated as time and resources have allowed. In some cases, BPI values have intentionally not been produced for areas if the underlying bathymetry is not of sufficient quality or coverage (e.g., some locations in the PRIA), or if the resulting BPI data is not meaningful (e.g., at Thirty-five and Thirty-seven Fathom Banks there was too little change in elevation to create distinct bathymetric zones using the existing classification dictionary, and as a result the entire banktops would be classified as ‘flats’).

Some gaps exist in bathymetry coverage due to hazardous conditions that prohibited access for the NOAA vessels or to limited time or funding resources.</completeness-report>
      <conceptual-consistency>Different scales were used in the focal mean analysis to predict BPI (reef) structures for each location. See the maps and metadata for each location for specific details.

Multibeam bathymetry data were collected by different NOAA vessels using the same or similar collection methods. All multibeam data processing was conducted in the same or similar manner by the PIFSC Ecosystem Sciences Division. The MHI bathymetry synthesis provided by the Hawaii Mapping Research Group was the source data for the Main Hawaiian Islands products.</conceptual-consistency>
      <quality-control-procedures>Corrections for tide variation and vessel attitude are applied to the multibeam data and a CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth instrument) cast is performed regularly during data collection to correct for variance within the water column.

Multibeam data are tested for internal consistency; however, no effort is made to compare these data to external references or to other published data. </quality-control-procedures>

   <lineage>
      <lineage-statement>The method to develop the BPI data layers are generally described in the Benthic Habitat Mapping "Overview" section of the Pacific Islands Benthic Habitat Mapping Center website.

The data are generated in ArcGIS using Spatial Analyst and the Benthic Terrain Modeler (BTM).

Bathymetric Position Index (BPI) is a second order derivative of bathymetry. The derivation evaluates elevation differences between a focal point and the mean elevation of the surrounding cells within a user defined annulus or circle. A negative value represents a cell that is lower than its neighboring cells (depressions) and a positive value represents a cell that is higher than its neighboring cells (crests). Larger numbers represent more prominent features on the seafloor, which differ greatly from surrounding areas. Flat areas or areas with a constant slope produce near-zero values. (Lundblad et al. 2006)</lineage-statement>
