The NMFS SWR collected historical vessel information on the U.S. tuna cannery baitboat and purse seine fleets for many years. The database's first record of a baitboat entering the fleet dates back to 1927. Individual trip dates and locations for the purse seine fleet have been collected since July 1982. Fleet operations have been conducted primarily in the north eastern and western central Pacific Ocean. A quarterly fleet report was published between 1972 and 2004. Hard copies of the quarterly report are on file in the NMFS Long Beach office library. The database is historical with last updates in 2012.
The database chronologies the develpment of the domestic U.S. tuna cannery fleet from primarily baitboats to its present day composition of mostly purse seiners. Early trip activity data aided tuna/dolphin observer placements while later trip information helped the Tuna Tracking & Verification Program monitoring.
Database is currently in Microsoft Access database format.
The database may be transferred to an Oracle system and integrated with the NMFS ITDS database, sometime in 2020.

Data collected terminated since the IATTC keeps track of purse seine vessel trips in the ETP and the NMFS American Samoa Observer Program keeps track of purse seine activity in the western Pacific.
Table (digital)
Historical vessel tracking includes the date the vessel entered the cannery tuna fleet, the date of any gear type changes, the date when the vessel sunk, reflagged or left the fleet. Vessel carrying capacity was also tracked in short tons. The time frame for this aspect covers 1927 - 2012. The other main component of the database was the tracking of fishing vessel trip dates and the associated ports. This occurred from 1982 - July 2012.

Termination of data collection
Jacobson, William
Data collection was discontinued as the IATTC and the NMFS American Samoa office collect much of the same data.
Fleet composition information is public, while specific vessel fishing trip dates are technically Business Confidential (thus restricted dissemination).
The database is currently in Microsoft Access database format on a NMFS West Coast Region server in Long Beach, CA.
Historic data that spans from 1927 to 2012.
Data collected from various sources: NMFS Southwest Region's Observer Program, NMFS American Samoa Office, IATTC La Jolla Office and tuna industry.
