Abstract

This data set contains vessels, logbooks, fish size and landings data for three fleets of gillnet vessels that operate within 200 mile of the U.S. west coast, mainly in waters off California. The three fleets consist of set gillnet vessels targeting halibut and angel sharks, small-mesh drift gillnet vessels targeting white sea bass and yellowtail and large-mesh drift gillnet vessels targeting swordfish and thresher sharks. In addition, observer data are available from the large-mesh drift gillnet fleet. The data are owned by CDFW and managed jointly by CDFW and SWFSC.

Distribution Information

No Distributions available.

Access Constraints:

NMFS/SWFSC personnel need a signed Statement of non-disclosure agreement to access the detailed data. There are no constraints on access to summarized data.

Use Constraints:

All use of the data sets should be cleared with NMFS/SWFSC/CDFG. All products (papers, publications and data summaries) must be approved by CDFG.

Abstract:

Purpose:

The data collected from California-based drift gillnet vessels are used by CDFW, NMFS, and the Pacific Fisheries Management Council to monitor and manage the drift gillnet fishery, to collect information used in stock assessments of species caught in this fishery, to monitor the bycatch of protected species, and to fulfill the reporting obligations of the Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs).

Notes:

Logbooks are mandatory and collected by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). Comparisons of landings and logbooks collected indicate that some logbooks are missing in some years. Landings data are collected by the CDFW (and Oregon, historically). NMFS observers collect catch, effort, bycatch, and biological data.

Technical Environment

Description:

The data set was originally in DBASE/FOXPRO, converted to Access then finally placed into an Oracle HMS data system.

Data Quality

Representativeness:

All vessels are required to submit logbook and landing information. Coverage should be 100%. Comparisons of logbooks and landings show that some logbook data may be missing in some years Length Composition data sampling coverage seems low but has not been evaluated.

Accuracy:

Landings data are submitted by buyers and accuracy is very high. Logbook data are completed by vessel captains and can be suspect.

Quality Control Procedures Employed:

Data are edited by SWFSC staff

Acquisition Information

Instruments

Instrument 1

CC ID: 865494
Identifier: Gillnet
Instrument / Gear: Gear
Instrument Type: Gillnets
Description:

Gillnets consist of vertical netting held in place by floats and weights to selectively target fish of uniform size depending on the netting size. Typical Gillnets are made of monofilament, multimonofilament, or multifilament nylon constructed of single, double, or triple netting/paneling of varying mesh sizes, depending on their use and target species. A specific mesh size will catch a target species of a limited size range, allowing this gear type to be very selective.

Platforms

Platform 1

Description:

various vessels ranging in size (20-40 ft length) chartered for cetacean surveys when a NOAA small boat is not available.
