Alaska Steller sea lion capture, marking, and handling data 1985-2018

This database contains information on individual sea lions that were marked or handled from 1985-2018. Individuals were handled for various projects including vital rate, telemetry and health studies. Many of the animals were either flipper tagged or branded. Capture techniques vary including; hand-capture of pups, hoop netting and underwater captures of juveniles, dart-delivered sedation of adult females, and floating pen capture of sub-adult and adult males.

This database serves as a repository for information pertaining to Steller sea lions handled by the Marine Mammal Laboratory (MML) in Alaska. The primary purpose of the database is long term vital rate studies of animals branded as pups. The database also contains size data and yes/no indicators of other samples collected (blood, swabs etc.).

ASSL-CAPTURES_InPort_17918.csv is a comma-delimited flat file and includes columns of UID (the unique animal identifier), brand (if marked), ltag and rtag (flipper tag numbers if applied to left or right flipper), tagcolor (flipper tag color), sitename (location of capture), month, day, year, sex, and whether samples were collected of blood, genetics (skin), or swab, and the region of capture. Header row of the file contains the column names.

UID: unique animal identifier, numerical.

brand: mark on animal, text.

brandloc: location of mark, L - left side, R - right side, B - back or rump

ltag: left flipper tag number if applied, numerical.

rtag: right flipper tag number if applied, numerical.

tagcolor: tag color if applied, single character text. R = red, W = white, G = green, Y = Yellow, P = Purple, O = Orange, V = violet, B = Blue, R - n red with new printing method.

sitename: name of capture site, text.

month: month of year 1-12, numerical.

day: day of month 1-31, numerical.

year: four-digit year, numerical.

sex: single character text; M = male, F = Female, U or blank is unknown.

age: single character text; A = Adult, J = Juvenile, Y = Yearling, P = pup.

blood: whether a blood sample was collected, text; Y if sampled, N or blank if not.

genetics: whether a skin (from flipper) sample was collected; Y if sampled, N or blank if not.

swab: whether any swab sample was collected; Y if sampled, N or blank if not.

region: six character text of the metapopulation where animal was captured; W ALEU = western Aleutian Islands, C ALEU = central Aleutian Islands, E ALEU = eastern Aleutian Islands, W GULF = western Gulf of Alaska, C GULF = central Gulf of Alaska, E GULF = eastern Gulf of Alaska, SE AK = Southeast Alaska
