This data set contains annual quantities and value for all seafood products that are landed and sold by established seafood dealers and brokers in Florida. These data are available on computer since the early 1960's. The quantities and values that are reported in this data set include the annual landings for the period 1976 through 1996. Monthly general canvass data are available for this period; however, the monthly data do not include information on the gear used and the fishing area. The gear and fishing area information is only available for annual summaries of the general canvass data for the landings that occurred in Florida and this information is in the Florida Annual General Canvass. See the sections on Links for the reference to the monthly general canvass landings.
One of the original purposes for these data was to provide estimates of the quantities and value of the marine commercial fishing industries throughout the United States as part of the gross national product for the nation. As the fishing industry continued to grow, the importance of this time series became obvious as a method to monitor the trends in commercial fishing activity. Although the initial methods of collecting the general canvass statistics have been replaced with the states? trip ticket programs, monthly summaries from the states? programs are provided to the Southeast Fisheries Science Center in order to maintain the time series established by the general canvass data set.
In addition to trends in landings statistics, the Florida annual general canvass landings data provide comprehensive statistics for the total quantities of marine resources that are caught and brought ashore (landed) for all species that are landed in the State of Florida.
These data duplicate the data in the monthly landings tables for Florida non-shrimp species 1976-1996. Care should be taken when combining data with those files. These are fishery dependent data reported by industry. See Issues for additional caveats.

Bennett, Joshua
Changed width of DEALER column from 9 to 10. This was to accommodate new 10 digit codes from South Carolina. Changes were made to all ALS tables for uniformity.

DATA CAVEAT: These data are annual summaries by county, gear, water, species, distance from shore. They are ALSO available on a MONTHLY basis by year, month, dealer, species, pounds and value in ALS.ALS_LANDINGS7278 (for 1976) and ALS.ALS_LANDINGS for 1977-1996. Care must be taken when combining data from these tables as the data are duplicate for FL.
2006-07-10
CAVEATS for POUNDS: All landed quantities are converted to live or whole weight with the exceptions of oysters and clams, which are converted to pounds of meat. Florida data are reported and stored in landed weight until the end of 1985, after which they are converted to whole weight. Conversion factors are used by the data suppliers to convert landings to whole weight pounds. Generally, these follow standards established in a NMFS Memo `Conversion Factors' issued January 12, 1987; however, conversion factors from Texas and North Carolina may vary from the official NMFS factors. The Texas and North Carolina conversion factors for are available from the states. Care must be used when converting these data back to landed weight. If the original conversion factors are not employed the weight will vary from that of the data supplier. The State of Florida uses the NMFS standard set of factors but applies them according to the typical landed condition of the for most fish species. Florida collects a landed condition for shellfish and for some baitfish.
2006-07-10
DATA QUALITY: The water, gear, and distance from shore information in this table is assigned by NOAA Fisheries Port Agents by means of an annual industry survey. Dealers and fishermen are asked to estimate the percentage of their catch by gear, water, distance, and species. The percentages are then applied to the monthly landings data to produce the annual file.
2006-07-10
NO SHRIMP DATA: There no shrimp data included in the ALS.GENERAL_CANVASS table. These must come from the monthly landings tables.
2006-07-10
NOTES on DATA Completeness: All data in the ALS rely on landings reported by industry.
2006-07-10
CAVEATS for SPECIES (NMFS_CODE): Some records are identified by generic categories, e.g., snappers, groupers, sharks, etc. and not by individual species. This is especially true for data collected in the earlier years. When long-term trends are required for individual species, adjustments or allocations of the landings for the generic categories need to be made. Examples of these types of analyses can be found in the Southeast Data, Assessment and Review (SEDAR) reports. See the address provided in the URLs section.

Landings invoices (trip tickets) are mailed or sent electronically by dealers to State of FL for 1986-1996 or, prior to 1986 mailed or sent to NOAA-SEFSC or collected by NOAA-SEFSC port agents. At year's end port agents obtained general information on catch area, gear, and distance from shore by dealer and species. This was applied on a percentage basis to landings.
