Abstract

Groundfish diet data collected during the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (NOAA/NMFS) groundfish surveys in the eastern Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, and Gulf of Alaska regions from 1981 to the present. Groundfish diet data are also collected by fishery observers aboard commercial fishing vessels. Diet data is associated with corresponding haul location data. Diet data is described to the lowest practical taxon with the exception of fish and crab prey which a generally described to the species level. These data are in an Oracle 11g.

Distribution Information

Access Constraints:

The portion of the data collected by surveys is freely accessible by request however, for scientific, management, and regulation compliance purposes, all data collected by observers are confidential under the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act; as amended, Public Law 109-479; 16 U.S.C. 1853; implemented at 50 CFR 679.50. Therefore unprocessed (raw) observer data can be shared only with authorized persons; however aggregated forms of the data are generally available.

Use Constraints:

Must cite originator if used in publications, reports, presentations, etc.

Purpose:

This research proposed to further define and understand the marine ecosystems that involve commercially important groundfish in the Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands and Gulf of Alaska.

Data Quality

Completeness Report:

This data set is a combination of collections made aboard research vessels from various agencies as well as commercial fishing vessels. Due to sampling methods and priorities there is an inherant patchiness to the spatial and temporal range of collections for a given species. Additionally, data from samples collected by fishery observers aboard commercial fishing vessels is subject to the data confidentiality protocol establish by AFSC.

Conceptual Consistency:

Data accuracy and consistancy are maintained as described in the REEM Database Description at https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/alaska/ecosystems/groundfish-diet-data-description

Quality Control Procedures Employed:

See process step.
