California Gillnet Logbook

This data set contains the catch, effort, and bycatch information recorded in the gillnet logbook. All three fleets use the same gillnet logbook issued by CDFW. Logbooks are collected by California and coverage is supposed to be 100%. Comparisons of landings and logbooks collected indicate that some logbooks are missing in some years.

Logbook data submission is mandatory under CDFW regulations and since the 2005 implementation of the HMS fisheries management plan. The data are used to monitor the fishery and contribute to stock assessments.

Logbooks are collected by the CDFW, edited and keypunched by SWFSC and CDFW staff into a database housed at SWFSC. Comparisons of landings and logbooks collected indicate that some logbooks are missing in some years.

Attributes define areas, dates, times, catches,fishing effort, by catch, sizes of fish, protected species interactions

DATE CHARACTER 10 Fishing day (MM/DD/YYYY). (1) <= today's date, (2) a valid date, (3) YYYY >= 1981

TOTSET NUMERIC 2 Total number of sets for a record; this field is specifically for catch records not split up by set.

SETNO NUMERIC 2 Set number, chronological for this date. It is greater than 1 if more than one set is made for this date; the purpose of which is to distinguish records with the same PERMNO, BOATNO, and DATE.

FGBNO NUMERIC 4 CF&G block number. Should be zero or be a valid block number in the reference table BLCOORDS.DBF.

BL_SIZE NUMERIC 3 Block size code (see SIZECODE.DAT), 106 if coordinates are from logsheet.

QUADRANT NUMERIC 1 Quadrant. Should be 4 (N.W. quadrant) for the CF&G gillnet data.

LAT_DEG NUMERIC 2 Latitude degrees. Should be in the range 0-50

LAT_MIN NUMERIC 2 Latitude minutes. Should be in the range 0-59.

LONG_DEG NUMERIC 3 Longitude degrees. Should be zero or in the range 90-150.

LONG_MIN NUMERIC 2 Longitude minutes. Should be in the range 0-59.

DEPTH NUMERIC 4 Depth of water (fms.). Should be <= 2500.

Confidential data limited to NMFS personnel with need to know (managing, accessing, monitoring or conducting research on the fishery or on fish stocks impacted by the fishery)

NMFS/SWFSC personnel need a signed Statement of non-disclosure agreement to access the detailed data. There are no constraints on access to summarized data.

All use of the data sets should be cleared with NMFS/SWFSC/CDFG. All products (papers, publications and data summaries) must be approved by CDFG.
