FINSS is a national system that characterizes NMFS ocean observation activities and data collection during fishery-independent surveys, and provides up-to-date information to fishery scientists, managers and the public through digital mapping and tabular reporting applications. There are 2 components of FINSS. The Survey Inventory component which has fisheries independent surveys and cruises information and the Incidental Takes component which record protected species that are accidentally taken during surveys.
* Purpose

There are two components of FINSS. The SI component provides a repository for data collected during fishery independent surveys. The PSIT component captures incidental takes of protected species while conducting fishery independent surveys.
Notes

This metadata record is intended to provide current, summary information on this system. As the system continues to evolve, each production release of this system will have a child metadata record within this parent record (see "Child Items" below). This metadata record will be updated over time to reflect any major changes to the system. Minor changes and release specific information will be documented in the children, release specific metadata records.
