The dataset is comprised of acoustic data recorded from SIMRAD ES-60 and ES-70 echosounders on board commercial fishing vessels fishing walleye pollock in the Bering Sea, during the winter (January - April). This data collection began in 2002 and continues to present with between 2 to 6 vessels collecting data annually. RAW data files store the acoustic return as well as GPS location, date, and time. OUT data files paired with the RAW data files store bottom depth as determined by a SIMRAD internal algorithm.
The initial purpose of this data collection was to ascertain fishing impacts on pollock aggregations. Since the initial data collection these data have been used for several purposes, examining local depletion of pollock, diel migration of pollock, possible mitigation of salmon bycatch in the pollock fishery, and environmental influences on pollock distribution and density.

raw acoustic files
Opportunistic collections.
Initial data investigations which resulted in publications were conducted by a hired technician using the acoustic data processing software Echoview. A project is currently being conducted which will semi-autonomously check the data for noise, integrate it into acoustic backscatter by 0.5nmi X10m bins, and store the results in an ORACLE database. This new software development has been funded through the NOAA cooperative research program and us underway. Algorithms for detecting noise and other data problems are under development. Final proofing and processing of the data is expected by September 2016.

instrument
Singlebeam Echosounder
The Simrad ES60 is an echo sounder capable of single, dual or split beam configurations. It is designed as a professional fish finder for fishing vessels and for fisheries surveys onboard research vessels. It can operate four echo sounder frequencies simultaneously ranging from 12 to 200 kHz, which allows it to both locate and identify separate fish species. Real time echo integration and target strength analysis in an unlimited number of layers is provided as well as storage of raw data for replay or analysis in post-processing software packages.
