The NEFSC's Population Biology Branch investigates and documents the biology and ecology of fishes in the western North Atlantic Ocean. Products and services focus on growth, reproduction, feeding, and movements of marine fishes. The branch has programs in Woods Hole, MA (Fishery Biology Program, Food Web Dynamics Program) and Narragansett, RI (Apex Predators Program).
<purpose>Research products from the Population Biology Branch are used in original research publications, as data in stock assessment models, and for management advice.
Feeding data analyses and trophic modeling studies investigate ecosystem-level processes and management.</purpose>
<notes>The principal species of interest for such investigations are groundfishes (cods, hakes, and flounders), pelagic fishes (mackerel, herring), elasmobranchs (sharks, skates, and rays), and select invertebrates (surfclam, squid, and northern shrimp).</notes>
