We conducted surveys of trap distributions, targeted habitats, trap damage to coral reefs and associated habitats, and spatial/temporal distribution of catches. Field work was conducted with local partners: FWCC in Florida Keys (this data set); UPR-M in Puerto Rico; and USVI Fish and Wildlife Div. in US Virgin Islands.
The goal is to assess whether trap fishing is damaging coral reef organisms and if so, to what extent.

Investigators conducted boat-based surveys per prescribed methodology to locate surface buoys attached to traps, targeting either lobster or stone crab. Locations of trap buoys were recorded with a handheld GPS. Traps were generally observed with an underwater video camera to document location and habitat. A subset of traps were surveyed by SCUBA divers to assess damage to habitats or structural organisms including hard and soft corals, sponges, alga, and seagrasses. Location data were plotted in GIS project with habitat layers from NOAA Benthic Habitat Maps.
