24436 Marianas Monument Mapping Project Project Published / External 24435 PIFSC Monuments Science Coordination Project In Work The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) launched a new project in 2015, funded by the Pacific Marine National Monuments, to develop a pilot web-based geographic information system (GIS) mapping tool for the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument (MTMNM). The pilot project will serve as a test case to integrate coral reef monitoring data; fisheries cruise survey data; and marine, oceanographic and ecosystem data collected by PIFSC and local natural resource agencies. The long-term goal is for this web mapping tool to serve as a repository and data dissemination tool for geospatial data collected within the Marine National Monuments. A proposed mapping project was identified as needed in the draft 2014 MTMNM Ecosystem Implementation Plan (currently in PIFSC editorial review) that called for the development of GIS products to include layers of habitat (including microhabitat distribution and utilization), fish and coral species and human usages.
