Gulf of Mexico Marine Mammal Assessment Vessel Surveys
Project
Completed
2023
The U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is required to prepare an annual Stock Assessment Report (SAR) for each marine mammal stock to update abundance, stock structure, maximum net productivity, human-caused mortality, potential biological removal (PBR), and status.
In the summer of 2004, the Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) conducted a marine mammal survey in the northern Gulf of Mexico (GMx). Operations occurred in the waters from 200 m deep seaward to the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) from Brownsville, Texas east into the Straits of Florida. The survey was designed using ship-based, line-transect methods in which experienced marine mammal observers visually located marine mammals, identified the species (to the lowest taxonomic level possible) and counted the number of whales and dolphins sighted along predetermined tracklines. A sighting constitutes a group of marine mammals (whales and dolphins) seen at the same location and time. This dataset includes marine mammal visual observation data and effort points with surveying conditions that can be used in abundance and density modeling per visual line-transect survey protocols. This dataset also includes opportunistic marine mammal photographs and information on biopsy samples collected during the survey.
The primary goal was to conduct visual line-transect survey for abundance estimation, and distribution of cetaceans in the U.S. waters of the Gulf of Mexico (GoMx).
The Southeast Fisheries Science Center was authorized to conduct marine mammal research activities during the cruise under Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) Permit No. 779-1633

This directory contains the media in .jpg format embedded with the exchangeable image file (EXIF) metadata recorded by the cameras (e.g., time, date, camera settings) as well as metadata tags specific to the research and survey (e.g., project name, permit number). Media are taken opportunistically with project and personal cameras and may include photos and videos of marine mammals and other organisms seen during the sighting or survey. Photos are organized by collection date and divided into subdirectories by OccurrenceID. Subdirectories are defined as:
For example, the nested file structure for photos may be as follows:
YYYY_MM_DD (First Level Below)
OccurrenceID: #_DDMMMYY, (Second Level Below) where:
# = sighting number
DDMMMYY = date
For example : 1_15-Apr-04 = sighting number 1 from 15 April 2004

Trackline, visual sightings, and passive acoustic data are collected using at-sea data collection programs. Field notes are recorded by observers and written onto paper datasheets which are then key entered into digitial databases.

NOAA Ship Gordon Gunter
The Gordon Gunter primarily serves the NMFS Pascagoula Laboratory in Mississippi. The Gordon Gunter is a 224-ft. multi-use platform. It is equipped with a thermosalinograph, CTD, fluorometer, and other oceanographic instruments that monitor atmospheric and oceanic conditions while traveling. A variety of research gears are deployed from the vessel including stern trawling, longlining, plankton tows, and dredging. The Gordon Gunter operates in all three SEFSC research areas.
