Data on marine mammal strandings are collected by the Southeast Marine Mammal Stranding Network. Basic data on the location, species identification, animal condition, and disposition (Level A data) are contributed by network members to the NOAA National Marine Mammal Stranding Database. Data collected since 2001 in the Southeast US and Caribbean are housed in the national database. These data document the occurrence of stranded marine mammals throughout the southeastern United States.

Data are available to the public by request to the SEFSC assistant stranding coordinator.

Data are provided on written data sheets and photographs by network members. These data are reviewed by SEFSC staff to verify that data have been entered into the national database. Data are reviewed to compare key-entered information to paper records and to asses consistency with data quality standards however, not all records within the National Database have been fully validated.

The data resides on a secure database server only accessible through the NMFS network requiring separate multi-factor authentication for both network and database access.

Paper or digital records are provided by stranding network members, and the network key enters the data into the National stranding database. Entered records are subsequently reviewed by SEFSC staff.
