These data contain shipboard active acoustics data collected in the Pacific, both pelagic and near shore environments. Data is collected using Simrad EK60 splitbeam multifrequency systems with the transducers pointing vertically down in the water column. The echosounders operate up to four frequencies at 38 kHz, 70 kHz, 120 kHz, and 200 kHz.
<purpose>Active acoustic data obtained during shipboard surveys are used to study the distribution, movement patterns, composition, and biomass of economically important nekton (such as tunas, snappers, etc), as well as their prey species, which comprise the sonic scattering layer, SSL. Once developed, hydro-acoustic techniques can become a primary method for stock assessment. Besides being free of biases associated with fishery dependent stock assessment methods, hydro-acoustic tools have the advantages of yielding large amounts of data on a controlled grid with a relatively low demand for resources. Further, active acoustic surveys provide simultaneous information on both nekton and micronekton, allowing to better our understanding on the effects of micronekton distribution, movement patterns, and biomass on its predators. With the combination of simultaneously collected data on the environment (such as currents, temperature, salinity, sea surface height, chloropigments), the effects of the physical environment on both nekton and micronekton can be investigated.</purpose>
