1
CATCH_KEY
VARCHAR2(20 BYTE)
20
No
No
Active
Unique key for this file; there is a one to 6 digit prefix (starts at 1 and goes sequentially up to 401,217) which is then followed by the trip ID number (see column 1 in the effort file documentation). This column could be used to link the catch to the effort, but the number preceding the trip ID would need to be trimmed out.
2
HAUL_NUMBER
VARCHAR2(2 BYTE)
2
No
No
Active
Haul number of this trip that this animal was caught on.
3
SPECIES_CODE
VARCHAR2(7 BYTE)
7
No
No
Active
Species code, which is formatted as an alpha-numeric string that combines the 3 letter POP alpha species codes with 4-digit NMFS numeric codes. So YFT4655 combines the POP code YFT for yellowfin tuna with the NMFS numeric code of 4655 for yellowfin tuna.
4
LENGTH1
VARCHAR2(3 BYTE)
3
No
No
Active
Length in centimeters, for species other than sharks.
5
LENGTH2
VVARCHAR2(3 BYTE)
3
No
No
Active
Length in centimeters, for species in the shark group.
6
LENGTH_TYPE
VARCHAR2(1 BYTE)
1
No
No
Active
A length type code that relates to whatever length appears in columns LENGTH1 or LENGTH2. The codes are 0=unknown, 1=straight length measurement, 2=curved length measurement, and 3=estimated length measurement.
7
SEX
VARCHAR2(1 BYTE)
1
No
No
Active
Sex ID of the observed animal: : 0 = unknown, 1 = male, and 2 = female.

Active
Begin haul date, in format YYYYMMDD.
9
SPECIES_GROUP
VARCHAR2(20 BYTE)
