      <abstract>Polar Ecosystems Program research projects focus primarily on abundance, trends, distribution, health and condition, and foraging behavior of phocids (harbor, bearded, ringed, spotted, and ribbon seals) in Alaska. This database represents data associated with live captures and specimen collection of all these species across a variety of research projects. Data include information such as capture date, location, time, and handling time, as well as information about each animal (e.g., age, sex, molt, pregnancy status, pelage type). These data are most useful when combined in a relational manner with other datasets (e.g. telemetry, health and disease, morphometrics).
</abstract>
      <purpose>The purpose of this dataset is to store all capture related data collected from various Polar Ecosystem Program research projects. This dataset serves as the authoritative inventory of ‘specimen numbers’ (speno) which uniquely identifies each animal captured or specimen collected. To fulfill its stewardship mandates described by the Marine Mammal Protection Act, NMFS is required to have information on these species, including abundance, population trend, extent of interactions with fisheries, seasonal movements, and distribution and harvest pressures. A long-term dataset from the wild captures and collected specimens of harbor, ribbon, spotted, bearded, and ringed seals in Alaska is an important resource. </purpose>

      <lineage-statement>Each phocid captured is identified by a unique 'specimen number' (speno). The speno consists of a two letter section corresponding to the genus and species (e.g. harbor seal = 'PV') followed by the year the animal was captured and a single underscore ('_'). The latter portion of the speno is a 4 digit integer uniquely identifying that seal for that year. This dataset also includes specimens collected when the animal itself was not captured, such as scat . When the species for a specimen collected is unknown, 'GS' is used for the genus and species prefix. </lineage-statement>
