This data collection contains records of Hawaiian monk seal and green turtle sightings in the Main Hawaiian Islands (MHI) entered onto MHI Sighting Cards from 1983-2002 and onto MHI Sighting Forms from 2003-2005 (since late 2005, MHI sightings have been integrated into the monk seal survey data). Additional historical monk seal counts and sightings from both the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and MHI have been referenced and compiled into a NOAA Technical Memorandum and date from 1859 to 1977. Much of this data has been contributed by the public and is not systematically collected. Though most of the data have been entered, some data are housed at PIFSC in paper form.
