The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories conducts research and develops gear modifications to mitigate bycatch of protected species by fishing gears. Pelagic longline bycatch mitigation gear evaluations are conducted aboard contracted commercial vessels in the Gulf of Mexico and Northwestern Atlantic using hook timers and time depth recorders. Both temporal and spatial data with regard to target and bycatch species are collected to evaluate the effectiveness of bycatch reduction gear modifications and techniques. Apart from the experimental treatments, gear configuration and soak time are commensurate with commercial fishing methods.
To conduct gear evaluations to mitigate pelagic longline bycatch.
