Abstract

The Acoustic Backscatter data sets are GIS raster images of the range of backscatter amplitudes projected onto a colormap from multibeam echosounder amplitude data or side scan sonar amplitude data. These amplitude data from individual datafiles are mosaicked into a single raster.

Distribution Information

  • GeoTIFF

These files are geo-referenced tif images of the mosaicked backscatter data.

Access Constraints:

There are no constraints to the access of these data.

Use Constraints:

These data are constrained by uses for navigation. These data will not be used for navigation.

Item Identification

Title: Acoustic Backscatter
Short Name: Acoustic Backscatter
Status: In Work
Abstract:

The Acoustic Backscatter data sets are GIS raster images of the range of backscatter amplitudes projected onto a colormap from multibeam echosounder amplitude data or side scan sonar amplitude data. These amplitude data from individual datafiles are mosaicked into a single raster.

Purpose:

The purpose of the acoustic backscatter data is to provide the user with a overall map of the area acoustically surveyed and to depict the survey in a manner such that the user may discern seabed substrates, habitats, and features.

Data Quality

Quality Control Procedures Employed:

A Saturation Monitor or Voltage display is observed for the amplitude values to determine whether the dynamic range of the signal is being limited.

Data Management

Have Resources for Management of these Data Been Identified?: No
Approximate Percentage of Budget for these Data Devoted to Data Management: Unknown
Do these Data Comply with the Data Access Directive?: No
Is Access to the Data Limited Based on an Approved Waiver?: No
Approximate Delay Between Data Collection and Dissemination: 30 days
If Delay is Longer than Latency of Automated Processing, Indicate Under What Authority Data Access is Delayed:

NA

Actual or Planned Long-Term Data Archive Location: NCEI-CO
Approximate Delay Between Data Collection and Archiving: 180 days
How Will the Data Be Protected from Accidental or Malicious Modification or Deletion Prior to Receipt by the Archive?:

Storage redundancy is the protocol in house.

Lineage

Lineage Statement:

Raw backscatter data recorded from multibeam intensity and side scan sonar amplitudes were normalized through either Caris SIPS, Fledermaus, or SonarWizMap processing software. The processed data files were mosaicked into a single image and exported as a GEOTiff.
