Life History Program

This data set includes separate bioSampling logs from each LHP Bottomfishing cruise in the Hawaiian, Samoa, and Mariana Archipelagos as well as a master file with all records.
While the data have not changed from previous InPort records (see Node 10806), this is part of an effort to standardize and streamline all life history program databases for past and future cruises.
These data to NOT contain biosampling measurements for fish caught in non-cruise-related activities (e.g. fish acquired from auction).
An Ecosystem Science and Management Planning Workshop was held in April 2005 that re-emphasized the need to update life history parameters from commercially important species in the Hawaiian Archipelago and assess spatial connectivity of local bottomfish populations in the region. It was further recognized that this work would require the collection of large numbers of geo-referenced samples to re-estimate life history parameters and assess connectivity between isolated populations. Collection of bottomfish specimens began to accomplish this goal.
Interested parties should note that individual cruises may/may not have collected extraneous information on the data sheet that is NOT conserved in this streamlined edition. Please contact the data steward if there is a certain value (whether or not a fin clip was taken) that you are interested in that does not appear here. These are retained in the original datasets but removed from the consolidated version made available to the public.

Table (digital)
Additional information is available on paper such as fishing logs submitted by fishermen with location, species, and tag information, as well as information collected from individual fish such as length, gonad weight, sex, etc. This physical data is in the FRMD storage room. Excel spreadsheets exist containing all information recorded on paper and are located on Meagan Sundberg's hard drive and the G: and H: drive at IRC that is backed up regularly. Information has been put into an Oracle Developer Form then uploaded into an online Oracle integrated database via the PIFSC's intranet, but this database is no longer operational due to lack of personnel able to maintain and update an Oracle database.

The weight of the left sagittae otolith in grams. NOTE: Oven dried weights were obtained 2007-2013, however, it was found the difference between oven and air-dried weights was insignificant. From 2014 on, otoliths were not oven-dried, but weighed after air drying in scintillation vials for three or more days. Oven dried values can be found in the Otolith_Wts_Msmts Spreadsheet.

In October, 2015, a stock assessment fishing project began and fishermen participating in that project provided fish to the LHP for age and growth research. The PIFG ID# is the number on the zip tie tag number attached to the fish when brought to the IRC. This number should be able to link each fish to additional information recoded on the SAP PIFG fishing forms with data collected in the field.
