Da0_MASS is a polygon shapefile representing 5 minute x 5 minute latitude x longitude cells that house the overall total biomass densities (kg/sq.km.) of 76 species of marine birds in the Davidson Current season (November 15 - March 14, 1980-2001). Density for each of 76 marine bird species was multiplied by average body mass for that species, and these products summed for all species in a cell, to obtain total biomass density. Cells that were surveyed but in which no birds were observed have total biomass densities of zero.
This shapefile was created as part of a study to assess marine bird use of coastal California waters within and adjacent to the Monterey Bay, Gulf of the Farallones, and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries. This file was produced for graphic/map display of combined biomass densities for marine bird species occurring within the study area.
This data set was compiled by R. G. Ford Consulting Company for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Ocean Service: National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, National Marine Sanctuary Program. The following researchers contributed ship-based survey data for use in production of this shapefile: David G. Ainley, Ph.D., H. T. Harvey and Associates; Carol Keiper, Ph.D., Oikonos; Lisa T. Ballance, Ph. D., Ecosystem Studies Program, Southwest Fisheries Science Center, National Marine Fisheries Service. Aerial survey data used for production of this shapefile are available on CD-ROM, Marine Mammal and Seabird Computer Database Analysis System, Washington, Oregon, and California (1975-1997).See Source Information for additional citations of contributors to this data set.

Accuracy
The at-sea density data, from which this shapefile was created, are the result of a synthesis of data from eight shipboard and aerial survey programs conducted in the study area in the years 1980-2001. Observation and trackline data from these studies were converted to a common format. All aerial data were continuous; ship-based data were converted separately into a continuous transect to the extent possible. From the digitized survey data, the distributions of effort and of marine bird species were mapped into 5 minute x 5 minute latitude x longitude cells using CDAS, a custom geographic information system for analyzing marine bird and mammal surveys (MMS-CDAS 2001). The length and width of the survey trackline in a given cell (estimated trackline width varied by platform, depending on speed and height above water) were used to estimate the area sampled. The number of marine birds seen in a cell was then divided by the area sampled in the cell to estimate density. If a cell was censused more than once, densities were averaged, with adjustment made for effort.Although the at-sea data span the years 1980-2001, data are not available for all seasons in all years. For the Upwelling Season, data are from 1980-1982 and 1985-2001. For the Oceanic Season, data are from 1980-1982, 1991 and 1994-2001. For the Davidson Current Season, data are from 1980-1986 and 1991-2001.All data sources were thoroughly checked for accuracy, consistency and completeness. Accuracy analyses were not applicable to this data set and therefore not produced.
Completeness Report
All shapefile cells have attribute information.
Conceptual Consistency
All shapefile attributes were checked for consistency of appropriate range values.
Up0_MASS is a polygon shapefile representing 5 minute x 5 minute latitude x longitude cells that contain the overall, combined biomass densities (kg birds/sq.km.) of species of marine birds in the CDAS central CA data set during the Upwelling Season (Mar15-Aug14,1980-2001). The number of marine birds seen in a cell was divided by the area sampled in the cell to estimate density. If a cell was censused more than once, densities were averaged. Cells that were surveyed but in which no birds were observed have densities of zero. AL0_DENS shapefile was created as part of a study to assess marine bird use of coastal California waters within and adjacent to the Monterey Bay, Gulf of the Farallones, and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries. This file was produced for graphic/map display of combined densities for marine bird species occurring within the study area. AL0_DENS shapefile was created as part of a biogeographic assessment of marine resources off northern and central California, for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Ocean Service.
