This dataset contains a unified GeoTiff with 30x30 meter cell size representing the 2006 multibeam bathymetry of the Charleston Bump off of the South Atlantic Bight, derived from data collected in August 2006. NOAA's NOS/NCCOS/CCMA Biogeography Branch, in collaboration with the College of Charleston, as well as the NOAA Ship Nancy Foster , and private sector partners, acquired multibeam bathymetry data off the Charleston Bump from 08/28/2006 to 08/29/2006. Data was acquired with a hull-mounted Kongsberg Simrad EM 1002 multibeam echosounder (95 kHz). Data has all correctors applied (attitude, sound velocity) and has been reduced to mean lower low water (MLLW) using final approved tides and zoning from NOAA COOPS. Data is in UTM Zone 17 north, datum NAD83. The processed CARIS data was used to generate a CARIS BASE surface based on swath angle. The CARIS Export option "BASE Surface to Image" was then used to create a GeoTiff of the priority areas. Rugosity was derived from this surface using NOAA's Benthic Terrain Modeler extension.
The multibeam data was processed as part of a mulitagency cooperative deep-sea coral assessment. The rugosity component will be used to characterize the seafloor topography to identify and predict deep water coral habitat

Completeness Report
This GeoTiff is sourced from a CARIS gridded dataset. The original full-resolution multibeam data was used to create a downsampled uniform-resolution CARIS BASE (Bathymetry Associated with Statistical Error) surface grid with a best depth component. The downsampled grid nodes from that depth surface were then exported and used to generate the ESRI Grid. Some positional shifts may have occurred between the original data points and the transformed grid.
Conceptual Consistency
Even though the survey was conducted to meet IHO standards, all users should independently analyze the dataset according to their own needs and standards to determine data usability.
For this project, data was collected aboard the Nancy Foster from 08/28/2006 to 08/29/2006. Multibeam data were acquired in .all format with a hull-mounted Kongsburg Simrad EM1002 (95 kHz). Backscatter snippet collection was enabled. Line spacing for acquisition was three times the water depth, and data was retained out to 60 degrees from nadir. Heave, roll, pitch and heading correctors were collected using an Applanix POS/MV Model 320 V4 inertial measurement unit (IMU) and associated Trimble GPS antennas. Sound velocity profiles were acquired with a Seabird Electronics SeaCat SBE19P CTD profiler and processed using NOAA's Velocwin V8.85 software, then applied directly to the raw data. Positioning was obtained using Trimble Zephyr GPS receivers.
2006-01-01T00:00:00
Raw .all data were converted and processed using CARIS HIPS and Sips 7.0 software, resulting in a CARIS HDCS format dataset with all correctors applied. Attitude and SWMB data was cleaned of fliers, and SWMB data was reviewed in subset mode by a NOAA contractor.
2006-01-01T00:00:00
After being submitted to CCMA by the contractor,CARIS HIPS v7.0 was used to generate a CARIS BASE surface (similar to a DTM), based on weighted swath angle, from the processed HDCS data. Then CARIS export tool "BASE Surface to Image" was used to export a GeoTiff in NAD83 UTM zone 20N.
2012-01-01T00:00:00
A GeoTIFF of source bathymetry was input into NOAA's Benthic Terrain Modeler. The output grid of calculated rugosity, with units in a ratio of surface area over area, was created with vertical exaggeration z=1 and with the same grid resolution as the source bathymetry.
