This image represents an 8 meter resolution bathymetry of the seafloor north of Santa Rosa Island in Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. It was acquired using the ME70 multibeam sonar system onboard the NOAA ship Bell M. Shimada in March of 2015. Data is in UTM zone 10 north, datum WGS84. All users should individually evaluate the suitability of this data according to their own needs and standards.
The Purpose of this mission was to map priority areas of Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary where high resolution data is lacking and evaluate the ME70 multibeam system on the NOAA ship Bell M. Shimada for map production to represent seafloor bathymetric features and benthic habitats. in addition, mapping was coordinated with a deep sea coral ROV team to map, explore and groundtruth new and previously mapped sites.

NOAA ship Bell M. Shimada is equipped with Kongsberg ME70 multibeam sonar and Simrad EK60 split-beam fisheries sonar. The ship uses POS-MV to correct for motion. Office of Coast Survey assisted in determining ship offsets for GPS to sonar head and other measurements. A successful GAMs calibration was conducted. Deep Blue XBTs are used to produce sound speed profiles every 4 hours minimum and applied during data acquisition. Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, Chief Scientist (Chris Caldow) identified priority mapping areas based on lack of current high-resolution bathymetric information. Acoustic survey lines were planned to coincide with ROV dives. Line planning was done in Hypack. Line spacing was approximately 2.8 times water depth.
