Alexandrium blooms are one of several algal bloom types often called "red tides," but more correctly referred to as Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). Alexandrium produces a potent toxin that accumulates in shellfish and can cause illness in humans who eat contaminated shellfish.
<purpose>These data are for the research and development to create computer models to predict intensity and location of blooms based on biological-physical models using sea-floor mapping of "resting" cysts and typical weather scenarios (bloom transport depends on weather events that cannot be predicted months in advance). With advanced warnings of blooms, risks to public health and economic industries can be minimized, while state agencies will be able to staff for significant monitoring.</purpose>
