39467 red_tide Data Set Published / External 37219 WHOI Project Completed 2009 Alexandrium blooms are one of several algal bloom types often called "red tides," but more correctly referred to as Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). Alexandrium produces a potent toxin that accumulates in shellfish and can cause illness in humans who eat contaminated shellfish. These data are for the research and development to create computer models to predict intensity and location of blooms based on biological-physical models using sea-floor mapping of "resting" cysts and typical weather scenarios (bloom transport depends on weather events that cannot be predicted months in advance).
