Abstract

Benthic habitat polygon coverages are being created for the Olympic Coast national marine sanctuary (OCNMS).ROV, towed camera sled, bathymetry data, sedimentary samples, and sonar mapping have been integrated to describe the geological, biological, and oceanographic aspects of habitat. OCNMS has collected side scan sonar and video data to produce polygon coverages. The habitat polygons have attributes for megahabitat, bottom induration, mesohabitat, macrohabitat and biology (where direct observations are available), polygon area and perimeter.

Data Quality

Horizontal Positional Accuracy:

Accuracy of the horizontal coordinates is on the order of 10-30m based on the uncertainty in position of side scan sonar towfish relative to ships position. Horizontal layback is more accurate than lateral offsets, since any lateral offset in the towfish position (due to side currents) is unaccounted for in the layback calculations.

Completeness Report:

Mesohabitat and macrohabitat observations are populated only in areas where video groundtruthing exists.

Conceptual Consistency:

Polygon topology present. Each polygon has a label and all polygons are closed.

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 499245
Description:

Geotiff images were converted to raw binary files and processed according to: Cochrane, G.R., and K.D. Lafferty, 2002. Use of acoustic classification of side scan sonar data for mapping benthic habitat in the Northern Channel Islands, California. Continental Shelf Research. 22: 683-690.The raw entropy, homogogeneity, and side scan images were imported into Leica Geosystems Imagine software and stacked into a single multispectral file. Training signatures were digitized into three classes representing hard, mixed, and soft sediment. Supervised classification was then performed using a maximum likelihood decision rule. The multispectral file was then converted to a grey scale image and reclassed to 3 categories representing the same as the digitized signatures. Individual sediment class images were exported as raw binary files and imported into Adobe Photoshop where misclassified pixels were removed or reclassed with help of digital overlay with the side scan image. Each sediment class image was then reimported into Erdas and then all merged into a single file where the final product was exported as a Geotiff representing seafloor sediment hardness. The Majority Filter command in ArcInfo (with Eight|Half parameters) was run on the image to reduce the number of features, essentially smoothing the data through a neighborhood analysis. The raster image was then converted to polygon features in ArcInfo. Sediment grab data and video information were used as a validation tool. Where video data existed, polygons were manually split to attach macrohabitat attributes.
